What is Integrative Medicine?
Integrative Medicine is a system of care that emphasizes wellness and healing of the entire person (bio-psychosocial-spiritual dimensions) as its primary goal. Integrative Medicine interfaces Western medicine or allopathic medicine with alternative or complementary systems of health care. Although many of these alternative and complementary paradigms exist as health care systems by themselves, they can also be interfaced with western medicine to create a new health care ideal. Integrative Medicine proposes that the origin of our health and of disease is multifactorial, including lifestyle, genetics, physical, emotional, psychological, as well as spiritual well-being.
What is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda (Ayu-“life”, Veda-“knowledge”) means the “knowledge” or “science of life.” Ayurveda is thought to be the oldest healing science in existence with its origin dating back close to 10,000 years inspired by the Vedas. Ayurvedic Medicine provides a holistic model for diagnosis, prevention, treatment and enhancing health and vitality that supports the total health of each person and the community. It focuses on self-healing or healing without medicine.
There are three fundamental psycho-physiologic-energetic forces in Ayurveda (Vata, Pitta and Kapha) called doshas that regulate all aspects of our health and Nature. Our constitution, our metabolic type, our physiology, are influenced by these doshas. Imbalances in these doshas can lead to disruption of our normal body/mind/energy mechanisms, resulting in symptoms and disease. Balance of the doshas supports optimum health.
